BUDDHA STATUE

Why am I carving wood in Japan?

Choosing trees was a natural choice for me, but I wanted to delve deeper into their roots.

I then decided to explore the world of Buddhist statue restoration in order to learn more about ancient Japanese sculpture.

During the eight years I spent as a student and assistant at the Tokyo University of the Arts Graduate School of Cultural Property Conservation Department's Sculpture Conservation Lab, I not only learned about Buddhist statues, but also had the opportunity to come into contact with the hearts of the people who created them and the feelings of the people who have protected them for many years.

Through this, I felt that what I was experiencing overlapped with the feelings I had towards creating sculpture.
