Kannon Bodhisattva standing statue (reproduction) of the Amida Triad, Kannami Town, Shizuoka Prefecture (2015)
When I first sculpted a Buddhist statue for my master's degree project (2015),
all I could do was reproduction the structure and shape.
Before I knew it, seven years had passed, and I was still determined to complete the project.
(Kannon, I'm really sorry to have kept you waiting.)
This time, we created glass eyes and a left arm and gave the surface an antique finish to match the current appearance of Kannon Bodhisattva.
At the time (2015), the left arm of Kannon Bodhisattva was missing, but was later discovered.
He has now returned safely to the body of Kannon Bodhisattva.
The Amida Triad, which includes the Bodhisattva Kannon, was created by Jikkei, a Buddhist sculptor of the Keiha
of Buddhism during the Kamakura period.
It is said that Jikkei was a colleague of Unkei.
It is believed that this Amida Triad statue was commissioned by Hojo Tokimasa to Jikkei as a memorial to his eldest son, Hojo Munetoki.
This reproduction is currently on display as part of an exhibition at the Joyo Historical Museum in Mito,
Ibaraki Prefecture.
If you are in the area, we would be happy if you could stop by.
