From the Scroll of Five Horses, painted by Li Gonglin, a literati painter from the Northern Song Dynasty (11th century),
I attempted to create a three-dimensional representation of the first horse from a drawing.
The Five Horses Scroll depicts five magnificent horses that were presented to the Emperor of the Northern Song Dynasty from the Western Regions. Each horse is extremely attractive, with some parts being exaggerated and others faithfully drawn, to highlight the best features of each horse.
I was intrigued by the difference between the deformed horse in the painting and the actual horse that served as its model, so I created an experimental work comparing the horse in the Five Horses Scroll with a real horse.
The techniques used in the making of this piece are marquetry and warihagi construction, both of which are used in the making of Buddhist statues.
Our great predecessors were also inspired by beautiful Buddhist paintings when creating Buddhist statues.
We need imagination to fill in the invisible form
Finding the right balance between your own shape (like your habits) and the shape from the picture
It got me thinking that these two points are interesting and a way to show off my strengths.
It was interesting to hear many customers comment that they felt the horses in the paintings were more realistic than real horses.
This has become a theme that I want to continue until I have all five horses lined up.
